Naming Us

March 5, 2012 § 1 Comment

Israel has just been liberated from Egyptian slavery.  They are free.  But the journey of freedom is never a rosy path.  A free people is always challenged by the wilderness realities of life.  Freedom is the beginning not the destination.  That is why God’s people needed the ten commandments (Exodus 20:1-17).  So that, when the going gets tough, they can be reminded who they are as a free people.  There are so many powers competing to capture a free people.  There are so many voices confusing the loyalties of those who are supposed to belong to the One who freed them.  God’s commandments are God’s way of naming us… giving us identity in the midst of the foreign gods trying to lure into false realities.  When last did you read the ten commandments?  It is your mirror today so that you can be reminded who you are when your journey of freedom in Christ continues today.
