The Coming of Christ

Every now and then we are confronted by predictions on the end of the world or second coming of Christ. We had some of that this year. Harold Camping, president of California’s Family Radio, predicted earlier this year that three million people would be saved, the rest perish, on May 21, 2011. When that did not happen, the explanation was given that a “spiritual salvation” took place on that date, and that the end of the world was recalculated for October 21, 2011. Well, that didn’t happen either. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 says, “Concerning the times and the seasons … you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night” (see also Matthews 24:42-44). And we can add Mark 13:32 that not even the Son knows, or the angels in heaven. Christ will come again like a pregnant woman’s labor pains (5:3). Therefore, we should “keep awake and be sober” (5:6). Being awake and sober also means to take responsibility: “”Soldiers of Christ, arise and put your armor on” (5:8). And finally, “Encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing” (5:11).
