Resting In Christ

Three words in Philippians 4:1-9 provide the key to Christian life. Those are the words “in the Lord”. This phrase appears three times in the first four verses to lay the foundation for a joyful and peaceful life. “Stand firm in the Lord” (4:1) when the foundations of life are threatened by all kinds of circumstances that cause anxiety (4:6). “Agree with each other in the Lord” (4:2) when the relationships of life are threatened by a lack of gentleness and kindness (4:5). “Rejoice in the Lord” (4:4) when that which is not true, not noble, not right, not pure, not lovely, not admirable (4:8) cause sadness and depression. All three these phrases extent an invitation to you and me to rest in Christ in the midst of difficult circumstances. So that “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (4:7). Peaceful hearts and minds today will depend on our ability to keep our focus on Christ Jesus, especially when we are most challenged by circumstances that threaten to occupy our hearts and minds with the negativities of life.
