A more beautiful prayer for the gift of spiritual discernment you will hardly find in the Bible: “we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9). The goal of God’s gift of spiritual discernment is always “that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way” (1:10). And what does that look like? “Bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might” (1:10-11). The result will be “so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father” (1:11-12). This is a prayer of encouragement to not allow the powers of hopelessness to determine the ways in which we go about our lives. But to find our strength from the realization that we live in the power of the Holy Spirit that will help us persist with the good things that we know come from God, and also help us to patiently wait on the Lord when things don’t go the way we think they should. Whatever the circumstances, always give thanks to God for his gift of life and that we can trust him for his guidance. May you clearly discern His ways for your life today!
