Spiritual Renewal

The poet of Psalm 32 uses a very concrete image to illustrate the importance of obedience to the instructions of the Lord.  He says, “Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you” (32:9).  Spiritual discipline is not something that can be forced upon somebody.  It rather requires somebody’s free commitment.  The season of Lent is yet another opportunity for spiritual renewal.  It is a time for a renewed focus on our spiritual disciplines.  It is popular among some people to give up something for Lent.  That in itself may be a very important discipline for spiritual renewal.  But Lent is also a time for embracing a new spiritual habit or refocusing on a spiritual discipline that became neglected over time.  Perhaps a renewed commitment to a disciplined studying of the Bible or taking up a daily prayer routine.  Whatever the discipline, it creates the opportunity for spiritual renewal when we submit to the Lord out of gladness for his commitment to us.
