Majesty is a word of splendor that captures the impression of beauty. Majesty evokes an experience of awe that inspires a response to an unexpected and mysterious reality. Psalm 99 reflects on such an awe-inspiring experience of majesty. “The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble… let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion, he is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name – he is holy” (99:1-3). The rest of the Psalm gives glimpses of what it is about God that evokes this experience of majesty. He loves justice (99:4-5); He answers those who call on him (99:6-7); He forgives (99:8). In a world that is characterized by so much injustice for the sake of protecting the power of only a few… where it seems like many that are hurt and destroyed by the forces of injustice are calling in vain… and where it is about the survival of the fittest in a dog-eat-dog world… God reigns with His involvement of justice and forgiveness. Indeed… “exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy” (99:9).
