Calling to Belong

December 17, 2010 § Leave a comment

Calling is at the heart of the Christian message.  And therefore, so is hearing.  Introducing his letter to the Romans, Paul describes his ministry as a calling to belong (Romans 1:1-7).  Belong to whom?  To Jesus Christ of course (1:6). That means, first of all, to discover that God has set us apart for His gospel (1:1).  We are God’s people who belong to Him.  But, secondly, that brings an automatic responsibility.  Hearers that accept the call to belong also become callers themselves that call others to belong too.  Paul says, “through him and for his name’s sake, we receive grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith” (1:5).  The peace of belonging to Him that we have received through His grace is also the peace of apostleship that we share with others (1:7).  What better time to share that with somebody that God brings in touch with you than this Advent time!
