The Shapes of God’s Love

December 4, 2010 § Leave a comment

We know God is Love, because He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to save a needy world that cannot save itself.  In Christ, and why he came to earth, we find the ultimate shape of God’s love.  But even before Christ came, God’s people knew very well the shapes that God’s love is taking on among people.  Psalm 72 gives us such a glimpse.  It is a praise song that concludes powerfully in verses 18-19 with “Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvellous deeds.  Praise be to his glorious name for ever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory.”  The first 17 verses give the reason for such praise, and point in the directions of where to find God’s marvellous deeds.  He “defend the afflicted”, “save the children of the needy”, “crush the oppressor” (72:4), “deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help”, “take pity on the weak and the needy”, and “rescue them (the needy) from oppression and violence” (72:12-14).  If these are the shapes of God’s love, where would you find it in the Oil City region this holiday season?  Let’s hurry to participate in God’s love among the people!
