Preparing the Way

Advent is a season of preparation. Preparing for the dinner. And I’m not referring to the Christmas dinner, but the Heavenly Banquet. Preparing the gift. And, again, I don’t refer to this year’s Christmas gifts, but the ultimate gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Matthew 3:1-12 tells us about the importance of preparing the way for the coming of Jesus by describing the ministry of John the Baptist as to “make straight paths for him” (3:3). How was John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus to come? By going around telling everybody to “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” (3:2). Love is not a sentimental picture of little baby Jesus in a manger, but love is an honesty with people by telling them the truth that the One in the manger was born to baptize with the Holy Spirit (3:11). Love is telling others the good news that He is God for us, and therefore, urging them to be ready when He comes again to finally distinguish between “his wheat” and “the chaff” (3:12).
