A New Spirit

When the going gets tough, we are in special need of God giving us a new spirit.  This is what God promised God’s exiled people in Ezekiel 11:14-25.  A new spirit is needed for people with divided hearts.  The first thing that happens when the going gets tough is we are desperately seeking for anything that will help.  Our hearts often get divided between all the voices that claim to be the solution to our problems.  Then we easily rely on and put our trust in something or somebody else than God.  During though times, God usually has to pull us back to Godself and make us realize and acknowledge again that we are radically dependent on God alone for our lives.  “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them… then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws,” says the Lord in verses 19-20.  When that happens others will recognize that we are God’s people indeed and that God is indeed our God (11:20).
